Born in Fremantle of Sicilian heritage, Josephine began painting in the late eighties whilst studying Graphic Design and Fine Art. She has since taken further casual art classes in drawing and painting, and exhibited in numerous art awards and joint exhibitions whilst working full-time in fashion, décor, and her own small business.
Josephine's ‘First’ solo exhibition took place in April 2024. This was a deeply personal goal and very successful. Having now left the mainstream workforce, she has embarked on creating art full time and paints from her tiny home studio most days.
Her semi-abstract and abstract works are created using acrylic paint and mixed media on canvas. Fabric, assorted papers, sand, salt and more have found their way into her works. These and the frequent use of the palette knife build multiple layers and sumptuous texture. The figure, still life, landscape and abstract forms are developed from a variety of sources, including reference photos, the imagination, dreams and responses to our world.
Many artists inspire the artist, including Matisse, Klimt, Vuillard, Bonnard, Van Gogh, Pollock, Doig and Basquiat. Josephine believes the creation of art is an infinite journey of experimentation and discovery.
